What are fillings

Fillings are be used to restore a tooth to a healthy state, normal function and shape due to:

  • Tooth decay
  • Loss of a previous filling
  • Fractures, chips or breaks in the tooth structure

The compromised tooth will be cleaned and treated and the cavity filled by applying the appropriated dental filling materials. The filling will “seal” the cavity, preventing bacteria causing further damage to the tooth.

How you know if you need a filling

Cavities may:

  • Cause pain or sensitivity to cold or hot food or beverages.
  • Be visible or in-visible to the eye (some may require an x-ray or special examination)
  • May or may not cause any pain at all.

During your dental examination your Dentist will assess your teeth and determine and discuss with you what is required and supply you with all the information needed to make an informed decision.

The procedure is usually done using a local anaesthetic and in most cases, is pain free.

Teeth Whitening

Over time, your teeth may become stained from the consumption of certain foods and beverages, ageing or smoking.

To restore your teeth to a whiter shade:

Dental Gel Treatment – Your dentist will apply the whitening gel onto the surfaces of your teeth, while protecting your gums. A special light will be focused on the teeth to enhance the gel whitening process. This treatment is done at Ormond Road Dental and usually takes one visit.

At-Home Treatment – Your dentist will prepare special dental trays for you to take at home together with the whitening teeth kit tailored to your needs. At home, you apply the whitening gel to the tray and then place it over your teeth for the specified period of time.

Keep in mind no teeth whitening procedure is permanent, so you may need a regular visit Ormond Road Dental to maintain your desired shade of white.

Root Canal Treatment

The aim of a Root Canal Treatment is to:

  • Save the tooth
  • Relieve the pain and swelling
  • Treat diseases of the nerve of the tooth (dental pulp), tooth root/s and surroundings areas.

The procedure usually involves removing the affected dental pulp, which is the part of the tooth that allows us to feel temperature changes, pain etc.

A root canal treatment involves drilling a hole into a decayed tooth and removing the dental pulp and nerve. Once removed this should relieve inflammation and pain. The root canals are then cleaned and shaped, filled and sealed. Later, a crown or other restoration will be fitted over the tooth to protect it.

The procedure is usually a painless as the tooth and surrounding area is anaesthetised. Remaining pain and inflammation may be treated with mild pain killers.

Is Root Canal Treatment Always Successful

Root Canal Treatment will only be performed when your tooth and surrounding gums and jaw are x-rayed, assessed, and it is determined there is a good chance to save the tooth.

Most root canal treatments are successful, however your dentist will discuss with you the potential risks given your specific diagnosis.

Veneers

Veneers are placed onto the front surface of the tooth or teeth in order to treat discolouration, minor misalignment, chips or cracks or to minimise gaps between teeth and build up worn teeth to restore a natural smile.

There are two types of veneers:

Porcelain veneers – These are custom-made in a dental laboratory and are designed to be applied to the front of the tooth. Each veneer is custom-made to a particular tooth and they look and feel very natural.

Composite resin veneers – These are applied one layer at a time to slowly cover the existing tooth. Each layer is shaped and hardened by the dentist until a natural result is achieve.

If you have healthy teeth and enamel (the exterior layer of the crown of the tooth on which to attach) then you may be a good candidate for dental veneers. Any decay or gum disease must be treated prior to the attachment of veneers.

With good oral care, veneers may last up to 10 years.

Crowns

A Crown is dental treatment that is fitted over the top of an existing tooth. It’s a permanent, fixed dental treatment sometimes used to replace a missing or badly damaged tooth (or teeth). A crown may be used when the tooth structure is very damaged, weakened or fractured.

A crown is made in a Dental Laboratory and can be made of porcelain, ceramic, or a gold alloy.

How is a crown fitted

The selected tooth is treated and reshaped externally to a small size. All decay is removed and the remaining tooth will be restored to support the crown. The crown fits like a cap over the treated tooth and is then firmly cemented in place.

Bridge

A Dental Bridge is used to replace a missing tooth (or teeth). The bridge is attached to the real teeth on either side of the gap left by the missing tooth. Bridges can be made of porcelain or metal, or a mixture of the two. They are permanently fixed in place and can be made to have a natural looking appearance.

How is a Bridge Fitted

The teeth on either side of the missing tooth/teeth are prepared to receive crowns which will hold the Bridge in place. The Bridge is then cemented into place. If looked after, the Bridge may last between 10-15 years.

Dental Implants

A Dental Implant/s may be used to replace a missing tooth or teeth. An Dental Implant looks like a normal tooth at the top with the bottom looking like a small screw. The implant is surgically inserted in the jaw bone.

A crown or bridge can be attached to the implant or implants if necessary. A Dental Implant provides a natural long-lasting result and they feel like a normal tooth and may last up to 20 years.

Tooth Extraction

There are a number of reasons why you may need a tooth extraction, some of the most common reasons include:

  • Broken tooth
  • Crowded teeth (for orthodontics or alignment purposes)
  • Severe gum disease
  • Loose tooth/teeth
  • Tooth decay
  • Wisdom tooth problems

The procedure is relatively painless and usually performed under local anaesthetic. In some cases after the tooth is removed a few stitches may be required. After the procedure, your dentist will discuss what do next.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are large teeth (molars) that emerge at the back of your mouth between the ages of 17 and 25. They can also develop much later in life or not at all.

Wisdom Teeth may cause problems in your mouth and need to removed if:

Impacted – Some wisdom teeth may not have enough room in your jaw. This may cause gum infection, tooth decay, damage to other teeth, and even jaw cysts. Lymph glands under the jaw may become swollen and sore as a result of recurring infections.

Pericoronitis – A wisdom tooth can partially appear in the mouth and still be covered in part by your gum line. This may cause swelling, inflammation and infection. It may be fixed with the combination of oral hygiene techniques and medication. In other cases, the tooth may have to be removed.

Preventative Dental Care

Scale & Cleaning

With time, plaque over your teeth may turn into tartar (calculus build-up), which needs to be removed for your teeth to remain healthy. Our dentists use ultrasonic scalers, a special piece of dental equipment used to painlessly remove the tartar.

Once all your teeth surfaces are free of plaque and tartar, we polish them to remove stains, leaving your teeth clean and shiny.

A scale and clean usually painless and takes between 30 to 45 minutes. We recommend a professional scale and clean every 6 months.

Gum Disease

Keeping your gums healthy is essential to maintain your oral health and general health. Most people will brush their teeth on a regular basis, but sometimes they will not have the same approach regarding flossing. Proper brushing and flossing are the most effective way to prevent gum disease and tooth decay.

What causes gum disease – Gum disease is caused by accumulation of plaque (and tartar) on and around your teeth and under the border line of your gums. When bacteria mixes with saliva and food debris, the result is sticky plaque that adheres to your teeth, particularly around the gum line.

When plaque is not removed, it will cause gums to become red, swollen, painful and easy to bleed (signs of inflammation), potentially resulting in tooth decay.

How does Gum Disease progress – There are two main stages of gum disease, called gingivitis and periodontitis.

  • Gingivitis – Is the early stage of gum disease. Usually presenting with redness, swelling and irritation of the gums. One of the common signs is bleeding while or after brushing. It might also cause gums to recede from the teeth causing plaque to collect on the exposed root of your teeth. If left untreated these areas are an ideal breeding condition for bacteria, which in turn will affect the soft tissues around the tooth and, finally, the bone.
  • Periodontitis – Is the advanced stage gum disease that occurs if gingivitis is left untreated. It is a serious, severe and chronic condition affecting the tissues and bone supporting the tooth.

Available Treatments

Gingivitis – Can be treated with a professional cleaning by your dentist. Follow this up with improved oral hygiene habits including regular brushing and flossing. A healthy diet will also help.

Periodontitis – Requires a thorough professional clean, which includes a deeper scaling and root planning to properly clean between the gums and teeth down to the roots. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove all bacteria. In severe presentations, soft tissue grafts are required. After any treatment, excellent ongoing oral hygiene is essential.

Mouthguards

What is a mouthguard – A mouthguard is a thick, often spongy shield that fits over your teeth. They are usually worn during sports and other activities that involve a high risk of impact to the face.

Custom-fitted mouthguards – Constructed and fitted by a dentist, a customised mouthguard provides the best protection for your teeth.

Wearing an appropriately designed and made mouthguard while participating in sport may protect against potential dental injuries.

A protective mouthguard should:

Be comfortable yet tight-fitting
Allow normal breathing and swallowing
Allow normal speech
Not cause gagging
Be odourless and tasteless
Be thick enough to provide protection against impact

Children’s Dental Care

Children’s Dental

Good oral health and habits start from early childhood. The Australian Dental Association recommend that children from the age of 1-2 should have the first visit to a dentist (Source: Australian Dental Association).

Your child’s first visit

Your child will meet our friendly dental team and they’ll be introduced to the dental chair and other equipment. Once your child feels ready, your dentist performs an oral examination to assess their teeth, mouth and jaw to check tooth development and identifies any risks of dental decay or problems.

Your dentist will introduce you and your child to proper oral hygiene techniques (brushing, flossing, toothpaste usage, etc).

Recommended visit schedule – It is recommended children and adults have a dental check up every 6 months. If necessary, older children might need to have x-rays taken in order to complete the examination to find hidden cavities between the teeth and check the development of the teeth in the jaw.
